Spika Team Revolutionizes Configurability and Versatility with the New Alpha Series Platform
Jul 01, 2011

Nothing makes a job easier than having adequate access. But often the various areas being accessed for maintenance, construction, or assembly require work stands with changing dimensions and capabilities; they need to be higher or longer or have more over-reach or a smaller footprint. Some tasks require two or three workers and several feet of protected fall area; others require only one person in a very specific location. Seeing a need for a versatile, maneuverable, and configurable work stand with greater elevational range, Spika developed the innovative Alpha Series work platforms.
Our design team started with a number of requirements. The new stands had to:
- Consist of a stable work deck, compact but with enough room to accommodate multiple workers, along with their tools and parts
- Include a stand-alone stair system that could not only be attached in multiple ways to the deck to best utilize available floor space, but allow independent use as a small single-point work stand, separate from the work deck
- Provide infinite height settings over ranges of 24" to 36"
- Maintain a consistent stair step interval, without the bottom step rising from the floor with the system
- Be lightweight but strong and durable, and easily moved by one person but able to support 1,000 pounds every 8 feet with a 4X safety factor
- Be designed and constructed so as to not sway, wobble, or spring underfoot
- Offer either fixed-width decks or extendable/conforming slider decks
- Be raised and lowered by various means, such as manual screw jacks, hydraulic cylinders, or electric linear actuators, depending on the customer's preference.
The resulting platform, the Alpha Series, meets all of these design parameters and more. Finally, a highly versatile work stand is available that can adjust from a working height of 60" to 84" or even 96" in seconds, without tools and by one person. With work decks narrow enough to fit in walkways yet capable of being linked together end-to-end to provide access and protection to unlimited lengths of work area, the modular design can be configured to accommodate almost any application.
With maneuverability and stability superior to other manlift options and at a fraction of the cost, the Alpha Series can be easily cost-justified in terms of improved efficiency, increased throughput and decreased process times, as well as improved safety and decreased worker fatigue. Compliant with standards set forth by OSHA for manually propelled work stands, towers, work surfaces, and stairways, Spika's maintenance platforms are proving themselves every day in commercial and military hangars and facilities around the globe.
